Heat Exhaustion vs Heatstroke: What to Do, When to Call 999 and How to Prevent It

As temperatures rise during the summer months, so does the risk of heat-related illnesses. Whether you’re working outdoors, playing sport, attending festivals, or simply enjoying the sunshine, it’s important to know the difference between heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

Although the two conditions are related, heatstroke is a life-threatening medical emergency that requires immediate treatment.

In this guide, we’ll explain how to recognise the signs, what first aid to provide, when to call 999, and how to prevent heat illness.

What is Heat Exhaustion?

Heat exhaustion occurs when the body loses too much water and salt through sweating. It usually develops after prolonged exposure to high temperatures or strenuous activity in hot weather.

If recognised early, most people recover quickly with rest and cooling.

Signs and Symptoms of Heat Exhaustion

Look out for:

Heavy sweating

Cool, pale and clammy skin

Muscle cramps

Feeling weak or tired

Headache

Dizziness or fainting

Feeling sick or vomiting

Fast pulse

Intense thirst

A temperature usually below 40°C

First Aid for Heat Exhaustion

If you think someone has heat exhaustion:

Move them to a cool, shaded place or indoors.

Encourage them to lie down with their legs slightly raised if they feel faint.

Remove unnecessary clothing.

Cool their skin using cold water, wet towels, a fan, or cool packs wrapped in a cloth.

Encourage them to sip water or an isotonic sports drink if they are fully alert.

Stay with them and monitor their condition.

Most people should begin to improve within 30 minutes.

If they do not improve, their condition worsens, or they become confused, treat it as heatstroke and call 999 immediately.

What is Heatstroke?

Heatstroke is a medical emergency. It happens when the body’s temperature rises to dangerous levels and it can no longer cool itself.

Without prompt treatment, heatstroke can lead to organ failure, brain injury or death.

Signs and Symptoms of Heatstroke

Unlike heat exhaustion, someone with heatstroke may have:

A very high body temperature (typically above 40°C)

Hot skin (which may be dry or still sweaty)

Confusion or unusual behaviour

Slurred speech

Seizures

Loss of consciousness

Rapid breathing

Fast, strong pulse

The key warning sign is a change in mental state, such as confusion, collapse or unconsciousness.

First Aid for Heatstroke

If you suspect heatstroke:

Call 999 immediately.

While waiting for the ambulance:

Move the person into the shade or a cool environment.

Remove excess clothing.

Cool them as quickly as possible using:

Cold water over the skin

Wet sheets or towels

Ice packs wrapped in cloth placed on the neck, armpits and groin

Fans to increase cooling

Continue cooling until emergency services arrive.

If they become unresponsive and are not breathing normally, begin CPR and use an AED if available.

Do not give someone fluids if they are confused, unconscious or unable to swallow safely.

When Should You Call 999?

Call 999 immediately if someone:

Becomes confused or disorientated.

Loses consciousness.

Has a seizure.

Stops sweating but remains extremely hot.

Has a body temperature above 40°C (if known).

Does not improve after around 30 minutes of cooling.

Is struggling to breathe.

When in doubt, it is always safer to seek emergency medical help.

Who is Most at Risk?

Anyone can develop heat illness, but extra care should be taken with:

Babies and young children

Older adults

People working outdoors

Athletes and sports participants

People with heart disease or diabetes

Those taking certain medications

Anyone who is dehydrated

Schools, sports clubs, construction sites and outdoor events should all have staff trained to recognise the early warning signs.

How to Prevent Heat Exhaustion and Heatstroke

Prevention is always better than treatment.

Here are some simple ways to stay safe:

✔ Drink plenty of water throughout the day.

✔ Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing.

✔ Stay in the shade during the hottest part of the day (11am–3pm).

✔ Take regular breaks if working outdoors.

✔ Wear a hat and sunscreen.

✔ Avoid excessive alcohol in hot weather.

✔ Never leave children or pets in parked vehicles.

✔ Check on elderly relatives and neighbours during heatwaves.

Do Schools Need Anaphylaxis Training?

While exact requirements can vary depending on the setting and local guidance, schools have a clear duty of care to protect pupils with medical conditions, including severe allergies.

This makes anaphylaxis training for schools one of the most important forms of first aid training available today.

Training gives school staff the confidence to:

Recognise allergic reactions early

Importantly, allergy emergencies rarely happen when the “trained first aider” is standing nearby. Wider staff awareness is critical across:

Schools should consider:

What the New RCUK Guidelines Mean for Parents, Schools and First Aiders

By Paul Markham – Green Box First Aid Training

Every five years, the Resuscitation Council UK (RCUK) releases updated release Paediatric Resuscitation & First Aid Updates based on the latest scientific evidence, clinical outcomes and best practice. The 2025 Guidelines represent one of the most significant updates we’ve seen, particularly for paediatric resuscitation and first aid.

At Green Box First Aid Training, we are already preparing to embed these updates into all relevant courses ahead of their full implementation from January 2026, ensuring our learners remain confident, competent and current.

Below is a clear breakdown of the key changes, what they mean in real-life emergencies, and how our training will support you.

Why These Changes Matter

In the UK, out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) remains a major public health challenge. While paediatric cardiac arrest is thankfully rare (around 750–800 cases per year), outcomes rely heavily on early recognition, prompt action and effective first aid.

The updated RCUK guidance reinforces a simple truth:

Early intervention by trained bystanders saves lives.

Education: Start Early, Train Often

One of the strongest messages from the 2025 RCUK Guidelines is the importance of early and repeated resuscitation education.

Key recommendations include:

CPR and first aid education starting from age 4–6

Annual refreshers throughout school years

Engaging, hands-on learning using manikins, scenarios and real-world context

Training tailored to the environment and likely risks

This aligns perfectly with how we deliver training at Green Box First Aid Training — practical, relevant and confidence-building.

Adult Basic Life Support: Key Updates

Call 999 First

A major update for 2025 is the instruction to:

Call 999 immediately for any unresponsive person

Do this before assessing breathing

Emergency call handlers now play an even greater role in:

Identifying abnormal breathing

Coaching CPR

Directing callers to the nearest AED

CPR Quality Still Saves Lives

Chest compressions: 100–120 per minute

Depth: 5–6 cm

Minimise interruptions

Rescue breaths only if trained

Evidence continues to show that CPR with breaths significantly improves survival when the rescuer is trained to give them.

AED Use and Pad Placement Updates

AEDs should be used as soon as available

Adult pad placement should ensure the heart sits between the pads

If three shocks are unsuccessful, guidance now suggests adjusting pad position to improve current flow across the ventricles

These refinements will be clearly demonstrated on our updated courses using current training equipment.

CPR on a Bed: No Longer a Delay

Previous guidance discouraged CPR on soft surfaces. New evidence now shows:

It’s better to start CPR immediately on a bed than delay moving the casualty

Remove pillows and kneel beside the bed to improve compression depth

This is particularly relevant in care settings and home environments.

Drowning: Immediate Rescue Breaths

For drowning casualties, the guidance now clearly states:

Give 5 initial rescue breaths first

Then continue CPR as appropriate

This reflects the fact that drowning leads to cardiac arrest due to lack of oxygen, not a primary heart issue.

Paediatric Life Support: Preventing Arrest Comes First

In children, cardiac arrest is usually secondary to hypoxia rather than a heart problem.

The 2025 Paediatric Guidelines emphasise:

Early recognition of serious illness

Structured ABCDE assessment

Rapid management of airway and breathing problems

A new section on special circumstances (asthma, trauma, drowning, hypothermia) and improved post-resuscitation care strengthens the entire chain of survival for children.

Important Changes to Paediatric CPR

For those trained in Paediatric First Aid or Paediatric Basic Life Support:

Why You Shouldn’t Be Afraid to Use a Defibrillator

Why You Shouldn’t Be Afraid to Use a Defibrillator – When someone collapses due to sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), every second counts. While calling 999 is essential, immediate action with a defibrillator (also known as an Automated External Defibrillator or AED) can dramatically increase the chances of survival. Despite this, many people in the UK hesitate to use a defibrillator due to fear or lack of knowledge. This blog will explain why you shouldn’t be afraid to use a defibrillator and how it can make the difference between life and death.

What is a Defibrillator and How Does It Work?

A defibrillator is a portable device designed to deliver an electric shock to a person experiencing cardiac arrest. The shock helps restore a normal heart rhythm. AEDs are specifically designed for public use and provide clear, step-by-step voice instructions to guide you through the process. They are commonly found in public places like shopping centres, train stations, schools, and workplaces.

Common Fears About Using a Defibrillator

Why You Shouldn’t Be Afraid to Use a Defibrillator – Many people avoid using a defibrillator because of concerns such as:

Fear of Causing Harm – A defibrillator will not deliver a shock unless it is needed. The device analyses the heart rhythm and only administers a shock if necessary.

Lack of Training – While first aid training is beneficial, you do not need formal training to use an AED. The device gives clear instructions, making it easy for anyone to operate.

Legal Concerns – In the UK, Social Action Responsibility and Heroism (SARAH) act protects those who help in an emergency.

Panic in an Emergency – AEDs are designed to be user-friendly. With their simple instructions, you can confidently assist someone in need.

Why Using a Defibrillator is Essential

Cardiac Arrest is a Leading Cause of Death – Around 30,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in the UK each year. Without immediate treatment, survival rates drop by 10% every minute.

Defibrillators Save Lives – Using an AED within 3–5 minutes of collapse can increase survival rates to over 70%.

You Cannot Make Things Worse – If someone is unresponsive and not breathing normally, they are already in a life-threatening condition. Using an AED can only help.

How to Use a Defibrillator in 5 Simple Steps

Call 999 – Ensure emergency services are on the way.

Start CPR – this ensures oxygen is going to the brain.

Turn on the AED – The device will start giving instructions immediately.

Expose the Chest & Apply Pads – Place the electrode pads on the person’s bare chest as shown in the diagrams on the AED.

Let the AED Analyse – The defibrillator will assess the heart rhythm and determine if a shock is needed.

Follow the Instructions – If a shock is advised, stand clear and press the shock button. If no shock is needed, continue CPR until emergency responders arrive.

Take a First Aid Course to Boost Your Confidence

While defibrillators are designed for anyone to use, first aid training can help you feel more confident in an emergency. Taking a first aid course will equip you with essential life-saving skills, including CPR, using an AED, and responding to various medical emergencies. All of our courses include CPR and AED training.

Conclusion

Why You Shouldn’t Be Afraid to Use a Defibrillator – Defibrillators are easy to use, safe, and can be the difference between life and death. There is no reason to fear using one in an emergency. By acting quickly, following the AED’s instructions, and taking a first aid course, you can be prepared to save a life.

If you want to boost your confidence and learn essential first aid skills, sign up for a first aid course today. The knowledge you gain could make all the difference in an emergency.

The Power Of Team – Why Our Team of First Aid Instructors Makes Green Box Your First Choice for Your Training

The Power of Team – We are not your average training company. We are a group of instructors that innovate, evolve, support and perform. In December we got the team together for one of our training mornings and our Christmas lunch. I find these meetings so inspiring and it makes me incredibly proud that we have become a really close knit team. We get members of the team to present ideas, we look at new products and training tools, we review, reflect and plan. The one common theme to this is how do we move forward, how do we make it better. This is what makes the courses you receive the best there is. The power of team

When it comes to first aid training, the quality of the instruction can make all the difference. At Green Box First Aid Training, we believe that our team of first aid instructors is the cornerstone of our success. Here’s why having an outstanding team is so essential to delivering the best possible first aid courses.

Expertise You Can Trust

First aid is about equipping people with the knowledge and confidence to act in critical moments. Our instructors bring a wealth of real-world experience—from healthcare professionals to emergency responders—ensuring that participants learn from experts who have been in the field. Their expertise translates to accurate, up-to-date, and practical knowledge that prepares students to handle real-life emergencies.

Not all learning environments are created equal. At Green Box, we pride ourselves on creating courses that are both engaging and effective. Our instructors use a variety of teaching methods, from hands-on simulations to interactive discussions, catering to different learning styles. This approach keeps participants engaged while reinforcing key concepts in a way that sticks.

For many, the idea of performing first aid can be intimidating. Our instructors understand this and are skilled at creating a supportive environment where participants feel comfortable asking questions and practicing skills. Their patient and approachable manner ensures that every learner leaves the course feeling more confident in their ability to help in an emergency.

Passion for Making a Difference

What sets our instructors apart is their genuine passion for teaching first aid. They aren’t just delivering a course; they’re empowering people to save lives. This enthusiasm is infectious and inspires participants to take their learning seriously, knowing that what they’re learning could make a life-saving difference.

Consistency Across Courses

Having a stellar team of instructors ensures consistency across all our courses. No matter which class you attend, you can expect the same high standards of instruction, professionalism, and care. This consistency builds trust in the Green Box brand and reassures participants that they’re getting the best possible training.

Should You Have a Catastrophic Bleeding Kit?

Should You Have a Catastrophic Bleeding Kit? Workplace safety is a priority for businesses across the UK, with most employers having first aid kits readily available for everyday injuries. However, in cases of severe bleeding emergencies, traditional first aid kits may not be enough to manage potentially life-threatening situations. That’s where a catastrophic bleeding kit comes in. Designed to handle major injuries quickly and effectively, these specialized kits can save lives when every second counts.

In this article, we’ll ask the question Should You Have a Catastrophic Bleeding Kit? We’ll explore why catastrophic bleeding kits are an essential addition to workplace safety, especially in high-risk environments, and why businesses should consider adding them to their first aid supplies.

What Is a Catastrophic Bleeding Kit?

A catastrophic bleeding kit, also known as a trauma or bleed control kit, is specifically designed to stop severe bleeding fast. Unlike a standard first aid kit, which usually contains items for minor injuries like cuts and scrapes, a bleeding control kit includes tools like:

Tourniquets to stop blood flow from a limb

Haemostatic dressings that accelerate clotting

Pressure bandages to control bleeding

Trauma shears for quickly cutting away clothing

Personal protective equipment (PPE) to keep both the responder and the injured person safe

These kits are not just for extreme cases; they can be a vital resource in situations where someone has sustained a deep wound or significant injury, especially when emergency medical services may be delayed.

Time Is Critical in Severe Bleeding Emergencies

In cases of catastrophic bleeding, time is the most crucial factor. Someone can lose a life-threatening amount of blood in just a few minutes. If proper intervention isn’t applied quickly, severe blood loss can lead to shock, unconsciousness, or even death. When an accident occurs in the workplace, having a catastrophic bleeding kit nearby means that trained individuals can intervene immediately, reducing the risk of fatal outcomes.

Legal and Moral Responsibilities for Workplace Safety

In the UK, the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 require employers to provide adequate first aid provisions to their employees. While this regulation traditionally applies to standard first aid, more businesses are realizing the need for additional safety measures in high-risk environments. Industries such as construction, manufacturing, and warehousing, where workers face potential hazards from machinery, falls, and heavy equipment, are especially at risk. By including a catastrophic bleeding kit, employers are going above and beyond to ensure that their teams have the best possible protection.

Applicable in a Variety of Workplace Settings

Although catastrophic bleeding kits are essential for high-risk environments, they can also be beneficial in seemingly low-risk workplaces. For example:

Offices and Retail Spaces: Accidents with glass or sharp objects can lead to severe injuries.

Educational Settings: Schools and universities may also face the risk of catastrophic bleeding from sports or lab equipment accidents.

Transport and Logistics: Drivers and on-the-road staff are at risk of vehicle accidents where serious injuries could occur.

Having a catastrophic bleeding kit available in these environments can provide employees and visitors with additional peace of mind.

Supports Mental Well-Being by Building a Safer Workplace

A safer workplace promotes a healthier, more productive environment. Employees who feel that their health and safety are prioritized are more likely to feel secure and valued at work. Knowing that the organization is prepared for severe emergencies, not just minor injuries, can help foster a positive workplace culture. Staff who receive bleeding control training and know that these kits are available will also feel empowered and prepared to act in an emergency.

Complements Standard First Aid Kits for Comprehensive Safety

Adding a catastrophic bleeding kit complements the standard first aid kit rather than replacing it. In cases of minor injuries, the standard first aid kit will still be the go-to resource. However, the bleeding control kit fills the gap in situations where severe bleeding or traumatic injury needs immediate intervention, ensuring a well-rounded approach to workplace safety.

How to Choose the Right Catastrophic Bleeding Kit for Your Workplace

When selecting a catastrophic bleeding kit, consider the following factors:

Kit Contents: Ensure it includes quality tourniquets, haemostatic dressings, pressure bandages, trauma shears, and PPE.

Ease of Use: Look for kits that come with clear instructions so that anyone, even without extensive first aid training, can use them effectively in an emergency.

Portability: Some kits are designed to be wall-mounted, while others can be easily transported to the scene of an accident. Choose a kit that suits the layout of your workplace.

Training: Ensure employees are trained to use the kit, so they feel confident and prepared.

Make Workplace Safety a Priority with Catastrophic Bleeding Kits

Incorporating a catastrophic bleeding kit into your workplace’s first aid plan is an investment in safety, security, and peace of mind. Whether in a high-risk environment or a seemingly low-risk setting, these kits provide the tools needed to handle severe bleeding emergencies, ensuring the workplace is prepared for even the most unexpected incidents.

Adding a bleeding control kit to your first aid supplies is a simple yet powerful step toward creating a safer environment for everyone. For those in high-risk industries, this could mean the difference between life and death, giving workers the best possible protection on the job.

If you’re ready to upgrade your workplace safety measures, explore our selection of high-quality catastrophic bleeding kits, designed to provide peace of mind and comprehensive protection for all kinds of workplace settings. Should You Have a Catastrophic Bleeding Kit – we really think they are now a vital part of your first aid requirements.

Understanding Cold Water Shock: First Aid Tips and Prevention

Understanding Cold Water Shock – When enjoying water activities, many are aware of common dangers like drowning, but fewer are familiar with the silent, sudden threat known as cold water shock. This phenomenon can turn a simple swim or boating adventure into a life-threatening situation in seconds. Here’s what you need to know about cold water shock, its effects, and how to provide first aid to someone experiencing it. Understanding Cold Water Shock is a vital skill if you want to get into the water.

What is Cold Water Shock?

Cold water shock occurs when a person is suddenly immersed in water with a temperature below 15°C. This shock can cause an immediate loss of breathing control, an increase in heart rate and blood pressure, and muscle spasms, leading to a rapid drowning risk even for strong swimmers.

Symptoms of Cold Water Shock

Gasp Reflex and Hyperventilation: Sudden immersion triggers an involuntary gasp reflex, followed by hyperventilation, which can lead to inhalation of water.

Panic and Disorientation: The shock can cause confusion and fear, making it difficult to think clearly and swim effectively.

Increased Heart Rate and Blood Pressure: The body’s response to cold water can lead to cardiac arrest in extreme cases.

Loss of Muscle Control: The cold water can cause muscles to stiffen, making it hard to move or stay afloat.

First Aid for Cold Water Shock

Call for Help Immediately: If you see someone experiencing cold water shock, alert emergency services right away.

Keep Yourself Safe: Ensure you’re not putting yourself at risk while trying to help. Use a rope, pole, or life ring if available to assist the person from a distance.

Instruct the Person to Control Their Breathing: Encourage them to try to keep calm and focus on controlling their breathing. This can help reduce the panic and hyperventilation. If they can float on their back this can help.

Help the Person Out of the Water: If safe to do so, assist them out of the water. Once out, remove any wet clothing and cover them with warm blankets or clothes to gradually raise their body temperature.

Provide Warmth and Comfort: Avoid giving the person a hot drink or applying direct heat. Instead, offer warm, non-alcoholic beverages and keep them wrapped in blankets.

Monitor for Hypothermia: Cold water shock can quickly lead to hypothermia. Watch for signs like uncontrollable shivering, which can then stop, slurred speech, and drowsiness. If symptoms appear, continue to keep the person warm and dry while waiting for medical help.

Preventing Cold Water Shock

Wear a Life Jacket: Always wear a life jacket when engaging in water activities, especially in cold water. This can keep you afloat if you experience cold water shock.

Acclimatise Gradually: Before jumping into cold water, try to get acclimatised by entering slowly, allowing your body to adjust to the temperature.

Know the Water Temperature: Be aware of the water temperature before entering. Cold water can be hazardous even in warm weather.

Learn to Float: Practice floating on your back. This skill can be crucial if you experience cold water shock, as it helps conserve energy and makes it easier to breathe.

Stay Informed and Prepared: Educate yourself and others about the risks of cold water shock. Knowledge and preparedness can make a significant difference in an emergency.

Conclusion

Understanding Cold Water Shock- Cold water shock is a serious risk that can happen to anyone unexpectedly. By understanding its effects and knowing how to respond, you can save lives. Always prioritise safety, wear appropriate gear, and respect the water’s power. Remember, the key to surviving cold water shock is to stay calm, float, and call for help. Stay safe and enjoy your water activities responsibly!

First Aid Adaptions for Pregnant Women: Understanding the Differences

Pregnancy is a beautiful journey, but it also comes with its own set of unique challenges and considerations, especially when it comes to first aid. Knowing how to administer first aid properly during pregnancy is crucial, as it not only ensures the safety of the mother but also the unborn child. In this article, we’ll explore the key differences and considerations for administering first aid to pregnant women.

Understanding the Risks

Pregnancy brings about several physiological changes in a woman’s body, making her more vulnerable to certain health risks and complications. Some common concerns include:

Increased Blood Volume: Pregnant women have approximately 50% more blood circulating in their bodies, which can affect how they respond to injuries and bleeding.

Changes in Blood Pressure: Fluctuations in blood pressure are common during pregnancy, which can impact the management of shock and other cardiovascular emergencies.

Potential for Preterm Labor: Certain first aid interventions or medications could potentially trigger preterm labor, making it crucial to proceed with caution.

Changes in Blood Sugar: Gestational diabetes can cause high blood sugar during pregnancy. It can happen at any stage but it is most common during the second or third trimester

Key Differences in First Aid for Pregnant Women

Positioning: While the recovery position is a standard procedure for unconscious individuals, pregnant women should be positioned on their left side whenever possible. This helps improve blood flow to the heart and uterus, reducing the risk of supine hypotensive syndrome.

CPR Modifications: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in pregnant women requires some adjustments to accommodate the changes in the body. If possible, try to tilt the body slightly to the left to alleviate pressure on the vena cava. This can be achieved by tilting them to the left or by rolling a coat or blanket under their right hip to tip them towards the left hand side.

Managing Bleeding: Due to the increased blood volume during pregnancy, controlling bleeding becomes even more critical. Applying direct pressure to wounds and elevating the affected limb (if applicable) can help stem the bleeding. However, it’s essential to avoid placing pressure on the abdomen to prevent any harm to the fetus.

Dealing with Shock: Pregnant women are more susceptible to hypovolemic shock due to increased blood volume and potential blood loss during pregnancy. Promptly addressing shock by maintaining adequate circulation and seeking medical assistance is crucial. In the initial stages lay them down and raise their legs around 15-30 cm. After approx 1 minute get them onto their left had side and if possible raise their legs. Remember, fainting is a form of shock and pregnant women who are laying on their back can experience feeling faint as the baby and placenta squash the blood vessels returning to the heart.

Recognizing Signs of Preterm Labor: Certain injuries or medical emergencies may trigger preterm labor. It’s essential to be vigilant for signs such as abdominal cramping, vaginal bleeding, or fluid leakage and seek medical help immediately if any of these symptoms occur.

Conclusion

First aid for pregnant women requires a nuanced approach that considers both the mother and the unborn child’s safety. Understanding the physiological changes and potential risks associated with pregnancy is paramount for providing effective and safe first aid interventions. By being aware of these differences and making appropriate modifications, you can help ensure the well-being of both the mother and her baby in times of emergency. Remember, when in doubt, always seek professional medical assistance promptly.

Whether used by medical professionals or even in the field by first responders, the simplicity of application ensures that individuals with varying levels of medical expertise can use it effectively
